Darwin Nunez breaks silence after red card and claims ‘ugly attitude won’t happen again’

Liverpool‘s marquee summer signing Darwin Nunez has apologised for his ‘ugly attitude’ and promised to ‘learn from his mistakes’ after being sent off against Crystal Palace on Monday.

It was a nightmare home debut for Nunez, who went from hero to zero within the space of a week. After changing the game with a goal and an assist against Fulham on the opening weekend, Nunez lost his cool and was shown a straight red card for a headbutt on Joachim Andersen.

Nunez had missed multiple chances as Liverpool trailed 1-0 to a Wilfried Zaha opener, and the Uruguayan made matters worse as he was given his marching orders. Luis Diaz bailed Liverpool out with a brilliant equaliser, and now Nunez has apologised for Monday’s antics.

Palace frustrated Liverpool throughout the game, and an individual battle between Nunez and Andersen began early into the second half. Nunez eventually snapped, and was shown a straight red card.

Almost 24 hours after the incident occurred, Nunez turned to social media to apologise, and promised to ‘learn’ from his mistakes. “I am aware of the ugly attitude I had,” Nunez wrote. “I’m here to learn from my mistakes and it won’t happen again.”

Jurgen Klopp voiced his frustration with Nunez after the full-time whistle, but insisted that the Uruguayan would learn from the incident. Klopp said: “There was provocation but it was definitely the wrong reaction.

“He will learn from that. Unfortunately he has now three games to do that. It is not cool for us but it is how it is. Of course I will speak with him.

“I came in [after the game] and wanted to see the situation [on television]. In the game I could not see anything so I could know what happened. I saw Andersen on the floor and Darwin walking away. That was my picture.

“Then I saw it – yes it is a red card. Wrong reaction in the situation. Andersen wanted that, he got it but he (Nunez) made a mistake. Of course I will talk about it with Darwin but not yet.”
