Man Utd set to miss out on Adrien Rabiot as transfer window goes from bad to worse

Manchester United are set to miss out on the signing of Adrien Rabiot as their transfer window goes from bad to worse.

The Red Devils had been expected to complete the signing of the French midfielder from Juventus after agreeing a fee with the Italian giants last week. However, The Athletic now report that Rabiot is unlikely to complete a move to Old Trafford this summer, with United moving onto other midfield targets.

It is understood that the gap between the wages being offered by United and Rabiot’s expectations is what has caused the deal to be put on hold.

The club had been locked in negotiations with Rabiot’s agent and mother over the course of the last week in an attempt to reach an agreement on personal terms.

Discussions are now taking place within the United hierarchy with regards to other midfield targets, which are said to include Real Madrid’s Casemiro.

United are believed to still be hopeful that they can bring in an elite midfielder before the transfer deadline, although it remains improbable that they will complete the signing of Frenkie de Jong.

Like Rabiot, United agreed a fee Barcelona for the signing of De Jong earlier in the summer but have been unable to convince the Dutchman to join the club.

De Jong is understood to want to stay at Barca this summer and is desperate to keep playing in the Champions League, with United having failed to qualify for the competition.

Things are not looking good for Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford

It is not just in midfield where the club have struggled to make additions this summer, though, having brought in just three new players since the end of last season.

New manager Erik ten Hag has been keen to sign a new striker but has so far failed in attempts to sign the likes of Timo Werner and Benjamin Sesko.

Embarrassing defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford have left United bottom of the Premier League after two matches, heightening the issues the Red Devils currently face.
