Elon Musk says he’s buying Man Utd and sends fans and internet into meltdown

Elon Musk briefly sent Twitter into meltdown when he joked he was purchasing Manchester United in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Musk followed up a tweet about American politics with the cheeky reply: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” The world’s richest man also admitted they were his favourite side: “Although, if it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.”

However, any brief excitement for Red Devils fans was quickly squashed, when Musk admitted it was a long-running Twitter joke. He said: “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.”

United fans have been desperate to remove their current owners, the Glazer family, and tensions boiled over after the proposed European Super League last May.

There will be more protests against the Glazers ahead of the Red Devils’ fixture with Liverpool on Monday evening. United had their clash with Liverpool postponed in May 2021 when fans made their way onto the pitch at old Trafford in a separate protest over the Glazers.

Organisers of the latest planned protests – supporters’ group The 1958 – have called for protestors to be lawful on Monday evening.

A statement from the group read: “We can not allow this to happen any longer! This is not about division, this is about unity. All United fans have the right to protest with the 1958 or individually. It is not about confrontation. Anything else plays completely into the Glazers hands.”

The Red Devils have suffered a disastrous start to the new season, and they currently find themselves rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.

Both Brighton and Brentford have claimed three points against Erik ten Hag’s side, with United performing poorly in both fixtures.
