‘Embarrassed’ Swansea fans can’t believe two own goals in injury time cost them win

Swansea City fans were embarrassed by their club after being left gobsmacked by a shocking end to the match against Millwall on Tuesday night in the Championship.

The Swans were strolling to victory after two early goals and had not looked under threat until the 93rd minute when Ben Cabango directed a cross into his own net. Just seconds later and with pretty much the last action of the game, Nathan Wood headed into the wrong net to hand Millwall an unlikely point.

It comes after a dominant display from the Welsh side in front of their own fans after Ryan Manning scored the opener less than a minute into the match. Michael Obafemi doubled the lead shortly after while the Lions had only one shot on target throughout the contest.

And the home supporters were left humiliated with one saying: “Bottle jobs- embarrassment.” Along with another, who tweeted: “Basics again! Embarrassing.”

This fan replied to the official Swansea account by saying: “Just stop tweeting please.” While another vented: “How on earth are you 2-0 in 92 mins and concede 2 Own Goals.”

A fifth fan summed it up succinctly by saying: “Embarrassing. Pathetic. Spineless!!” And this supporter wrote: “Such a dominant performance turned sour by a lack of mentality. Time and time again, Swans will always give away comfortable leads…”

After the match, Swansea boss Russell Martin was equally perplexed and outraged that his side had managed to throw away a two-goal lead through two own goals. He said: “For 93 or 94 minutes, we were by far and away the best team. Dominant, aggressive, everything we got criticised for against Blackburn, and rightly so in a lot of senses.

“I think the boys put it right tonight. We should have scored more goals. Millwall only had one shot on target before two of our defenders scored own goals. We should make more of our own chances in the final third.

“I have to take responsibility for it, I’m in charge of the mentality of the team. Even though we have so many young men on the pitch, we have to do better than we did.”
