Mercedes’ savage boss admits he studied Man Utd’s failures to avoid same mistakes

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has savagely admitted he studied Manchester United failures to avoid the same mistakes.

United are currently in a state of crisis following their embarrassing start to the season, dropping to the foot of the table following Saturday’s 4-0 drubbing at Brentford. There poor start to the season has come after nine years of decline since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Wolff has now revealed that he has looked at the failures of team’s like United in order to improve and maintain the success of his record-breaking Mercedes team in the years to come.

The Red Devils have failed to win the Premier League in the nine years since Ferguson’s retirement and are currently without any trophy for five years.

Referencing how United have coped after Ferguson, Wolff told the Financial Times: “I studied why great teams were not able to repeat great title [runs].

“No sports team in any sport has ever won eight consecutive World Championship titles and there are many reasons for that, and what is at the core is the human.

“The human gets complacent. You are not energised in the same way you were before. You are maybe not as ambitious.

“I often get the question: ‘How hard is that?’ I had so many periods, so many episodes in my life that I would judge as difficult, that this is not on the same scale.

“I don’t think it’s challenging in a way because I’ve had much harder times in all of my life, not particularly in Formula 1, but this is actually within my comfort zone.”

Mercedes have enjoyed unparalleled success since Wolff became team principal in 2014, winning the last eight Formula One Constructors’ Championships.

The winners of seven-straight Drivers’ Championships also drove for Mercedes before their run came to an end last year when Red Bull’s Max Verstappen became world champion.

Wolff and Mercedes are currently third in the Constructors’ Championship this season, behind Red Bull and Ferrari. He will be hoping to close the gap to those above Mercedes on August 28 when the season resumes with the Belgian Grand Prix.
