Ryan Giggs breaks down crying in court over ‘worst experience of my life’ in prison cell

Ryan Giggs has broken down in tears in court over what he described as the “worst experience of my life”.

The former Manchester United winger is currently on trial at Manchester Crown Court accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour against his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville, as well as assaulting her and her sister Emma Greville. Giggs has denied all the charges against him and has been giving evidence from the witness box on Thursday.

Speaking to the court, he explained that he was “scared” when he spoke to police officers at his house on the night of his arrest in November 2020.

He added: “I’d never been in that position before.” Giggs went on to state that he was then taken to Pendleton police station, where he spent the night in a cell. He described it as “the worst experience of my life,” before breaking down in tears.

Later, the former Wales manager told the court that he can be “hot-headed” and a “jealous type” when being questioned by prosecutor Peter Wright QC.

Mr Wright asked Giggs about the 999 calls made on the night of the alleged assault and stated that Giggs had been “angry, not scared”.

However Giggs replied and told the court: “I was scared.”

Mr Wright then added that Giggs was “quiet”, “cooperative” and “measured” when he spoke to the police that night.

The 48-year-old accepted that he was not “measured” or “polite” when heard during the 999 calls, with Mr Wright suggesting Giggs had “flipped”, to which Giggs replied: “No.”

The prosecutor then suggested that Giggs had “the capacity to flip” in his personal life, with Giggs again telling the court: “No.”

When asked if he was a “jealous-type” and “hot-headed”, Giggs did state: “On occasions.” Later asked why he had referred to Ms Greville as “c***” in an email, he explained: “I was emotional and there was no excuse for my language.”

Giggs has been giving evidence for a second day in the trial, which got underway in Manchester last week.

The trial continues.
