Vision emerges of drunk driver’s car slamming into back of ute on the Gold Coast and catching fire

An alleged drunk driver has ploughed into a ute before his vehicle caught alight while a tow truck driver was inside the vehicle.

The 24-year-old driver allegedly blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.211, more than four times the legal limit, after the accident on Monday morning.

He was also charged with assaulting a police officer during an alleged incident after the accident.

Jason Kemp, 45, whose car was rear ended, spoke to Sunrise on Wednesday and said the sudden ramming of his car it was ‘a bit of a shock’.

‘I was just sitting at the lights, waiting for them to turn green, when just bang, straight up the clacker,’ Mr Kemp said.

Mr Kemp’s rear-cam caught the moment of impact before more drama unfolded after he exited his car.

While a tow truck driver attempted to move the rear car it suddenly burst into flames, the towie narrowly escaping from the vehicle’s cabin.

The car’s driver then called out, ‘My car is on fire … mate, put it the f*** out, put it the f*** out’, as he held a phone to his head.

Mr Kemp sprayed the car with a fire extinguisher before police caught up with the motorist and breath tested him.

Once police got the reading, the Varsity Lakes man was taken to a watch house for further tests, where he allegedly assaulted a police officer.

He was charged with serious assault of a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol. The man will front Southport Magistrates Court on August 29.

Mr Kemp told 7NEWS: ‘He realised how much trouble he was actually in and that’s when he started getting a bit angry.’

Mr Kemp walked away with just a sore neck from the ordeal and minimal damage to his ute.
