A 33-year-old man has been killed after being struck by a vehicle on a Queensland motorway, causing the road to be closed and leaving motorists stranded for more than seven hours.

The tragedy meant hundreds of people, including families, were forced to huddle in their cars where they spent the entire night.

The Logan Motorway was closed eastbound just before the Oxley, Forest Lake and Stapylton exit from just after 10pm on Thursday and was only reopened at 5.30am on Friday.

One stranded family told 9News the night had been ‘hell’, as a combination of cold temperatures, no food, water or a toilet meant the whole night was one that they want to forget.

‘It’s been pretty crazy. We’ve been stuck since about 9.45pm actually,’ Annette Jones said.

‘It’s been hell … Not much you can do.’

Police say the 33-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a left-hand guard rail.

‘As a result of the crash, a man has stepped out of the vehicle and was standing in the left hand lane of the motorway,’ Queensland police said in a statement.

Numerous approaching vehicles then had to take evasive action, causing a separate crash which struck and killed the man.

The Logan man was transported to hospital in a critical condition, where he died as a result of his injuries.

A 37-year-old man and a 26-year-old man were also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Hundreds of motorists had to endure the entire night in their cars as emergency services were unable to divert traffic due to the crash occurring in between two major exits.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area is being urged to contact police.
