Rishi Sunak claims he enjoys a McDonald’s breakfast wrap – but they haven’t been sold since 2020

Rishi Sunak risked being mocked today after claiming to always purchase a McDonald’s breakfast wrap when out with his eldest daughter – despite the item having not been on sale since March 2020.

The Tory leadership hopeful was accused of a faux pas during a TV interview, when he was quizzed about what he ordered when he recently visited a McDonald’s restaurant.

Mr Sunak yesterday shared a photo of himself ordering at one of the fast food chain’s self-service machines, while he was out on the road campaigning to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

Appearing on ITV‘s This morning today, the former chancellor was asked the ‘killer question’ of what items he had chosen.

‘I was there at about I think, gosh, 7.45 in the morning or 7.30 – so it was not a burger and nuggets! I got breakfast,’ Mr Sunak replied.

‘I get a bacon roll with ketchup and the pancakes.’

Asked by show host Rochelle Humes if he had also ordered a hash brown, the Conservative MP added: ‘I didn’t yesterday but if I’m with my daughters then we get the wrap.

‘With my eldest daughter… if I’m with her, that wrap with the hash brown and everything in it is what we do.’

But aficionados of McDonald’s were quick to point out that the breakfast wrap hasn’t been on sale since March 2020.

The fast food chain closed all its outlets at the start of the Covid pandemic and, when their restaurants began reopening, the breakfast wrap did not return to menus.

In January this year, McDonald’s confirmed that its breakfast wrap – and breakfast bagel – had permanently been removed from sale.

In a light-hearted statement, the company said: ‘It is with love and deep respect for one another that we announce that we are parting ways with Breakfast Bagels & Breakfast Wraps.

‘Despite speculation and following a trial separation period, Breakfast Bagels & Breakfast Wraps will not be returning to the menu.

‘We adore each other deeply but our love for the iconic McMuffin was simply too hard to ignore.’

Asked about Mr Sunak’s apparent gaffe over breakfast wraps, a source on his campaign team said: ‘He had it with his girls when it was on the menu.’

The ex-Cabinet minister yesterday posted a picture of him ordering at a McDonald’s as he attempted to make light of a previous awkward moment – when he struggled to make a contactless payment at a fuel station.

Alongside the photo of him using a bank card on a contactless machine at McDonald’s on Wednesday, Mr Sunak added the caption: ‘Nailed it.’

Appearing on This Morning, he today joked he had been wowed by ‘technology these days’ when he made the payment.

In March, as he attempted to promote the Treasury’s temporary fuel duty cut, the then chancellor had been filmed awkwardly struggling to pay for a tank of petrol and a can of Coke.

Viewers of This Morning today branded Mr Sunak’s comments about the McDonald’s breakfast wrap as ’embarrassing’.

One social media user joked that Mr Sunak would soon be trying to order a Whopper burger – a staple of the Burger King menu – from McDonald’s.

Another wrote: ‘Rishi Sunak does not know what they sell at McDonald’s pls this is embarrassing.’
