McLaren supercar bursts into flames after race car driver smashes into power pole in the Gold Coast

A 34-year-old race car driver and his 31-year-old passenger are lucky to be alive after his luxury McLaren supercar smashed into a pole and burst into flames.

Queensland police said the driver lost control while exiting a roundabout on Ashmore Road and Upton Street in Bundall, Gold Coast, at about 10pm on Thursday.

The $350,000 sportscar then smashed into a power pole causing it to snap at the base from the force of the collision.

Residents heard the accident and rushed to the scene where they saw the sportscar on fire.

Fearing the car would erupt into flames, the residents raced to rip the doors of the wrecked vehicle.

The driver, a Mermaid Waters man, and his passenger, a woman from Southport, were dragged out to safety.

Paramedics praised the quick-thinking bystanders for their brave efforts in rescuing the pair.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Adam Flory said the man and woman were on the road when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Mr Flory praised the bystanders for their quick-thinking and brave efforts in rescuing the pair.

‘These people have done a great job at putting themselves in harm’s way to save these people from serious injuries,’ Mr Flory said.

The pair were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital where the man is being treated for a broken leg and minor burns.

Gold Coast police said the supercar was not stolen and an investigation into the accident was ongoing.
