Spurs fans mock ‘massive’ West Ham’s attendance as tiny crowd sees Scamacca goal

West Ham might be taking a two-goal cushion into next week’s Europa Conference playoff second leg – but that didn’t stop them getting ridiculed on social media.

Rival fans couldn’t help but laugh at the amount of empty seats dotted around the London Stadium on Thursday night as the Hammers sealed a 3-1 win over Danish opponents Viborg.

“Attendance looks as massive as @WestHam are at the London stadium tonight,” a Tottenham tweeted, along with a photo of West Ham’s half-empty ground during the match.

“West Ham those empty seats are the reason Nunes didn’t wanna sign for ya,” tweeted another, while a third said: “That crowd is absolutely pathetic. Thought West Ham had a better support than that. Empty seats galore.”

West Ham fans hit back though, claiming the poor attendance was due to the rail strikes that had hampered London throughout the day.

Meanwhile, £30million summer signing Gianluca Scamacca netted his first goal for the club – a towering back-post header to put the hosts in front mid-way through the first half – before Jarrod Bowen doubled their advantage just after the hour mark.

Viborg pulled one back a few minutes later, but Michail Antonio’s first of the season ensured West Ham avoided a nervy finish.

David Moyes’ side will hoping to string together a second solid European run in as many years after reaching the Europa League semi-final last season. They toppled the likes of Sevilla and Lyon before eventually being downed by Frankfurt, who themselves beat Rangers in a tense shoot-out in the final.
