Kylian Mbappe scores in eight seconds after copying kick-off routine used by Bournemouth

PSG used an increasingly popular kick-off routine to great effect as Kylian Mbappe gave them lead against Lille after just eight seconds.

Fans had barely settled into their seats when Lionel Messi played a ball over the top for Mbappe to latch onto. He beat the offside trap before lobbing the hosts’ goalkeeper Leo Jardim to net the fastest goal in Ligue 1 history.

The ploy first caught the attention of football fans last December when Bournemouth scored immediately after half-time against Fulham in the Championship. The strike clocked in at six seconds from whistle to whistle, slightly quicker than PSG’s.

While the likes of Philip Billing and Dominic Solanke were involved for that goal, it was the French side’s megastars who made theirs. Neymar played a one-two with Marco Verratti from kick-off, before laying it off to Messi who expertly picked out Mbappe.

More and more clubs have adopted the tactic in recent months, with Real Madrid seen trying it unsuccessfully during a game last season. Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam were able to profit from the move earlier this month, though.

Their official Twitter account gave a nod to who they’d been inspired by, thanking Bournemouth in a post which showed both goals side-by-side. And fans were quick to point out where PSG had nicked it from too.

One wrote: “Bournemouth’s kick off routine is getting rinsed.” A second commented: “That PSG kick off is the new cheat code. I’ve seen it quite a few times since Bournemouth did it against Fulham.”

“The coach who drew it up must be buzzing,” replied one. And another joked: “Bournemouth taught PSG everything they know…”

One noted: “Bournemouth, Sparta Rotterdam, Real Madrid then now PSG, this is the new fashionable combination.”

And another added: “PSG will soon have to thank Sparta Rotterdam and Bournemouth who inspired Mbappé’s goal.”
