Player ‘freezes’ before taking penalty so strange fans think video is ‘stopping’

A bizarre penalty technique from the Liga Portugal 2 – the second tier of Portugal’s footballing pyramid – has gone viral after the player appeared to ‘freeze’.

Jardel, of CD Feirense, was given the golden opportunity to level the game from the spot after his side won a penalty. While some players may freeze under pressure when taking a spot-kick, Jardel froze on purpose as he channelled his inner statue.

For seven seconds Jardel hovered over the ball before he blasted the ball to the keeper’s left. It was the final goal of the game as CD Feirense and Leixoes drew 1-1.

One fan joked: “Thank the No.9 and 61 if it ain’t for them… I would have thought it’s fake.”

“He scored and all, ok, good, but I’d like to see the manager’s face during this penalty,” a second joked. While a fourth added: “Surly that is against the rules I was hoping he was going to miss the peno after all that.”

A fourth simply said: “That is the best penalty ever taken in the history of football.”

However, any hope of Jardel lending his name to a penalty-taking technique like Jorginho or Antonin Panenka was quickly dashed.

Jardel had another chance from the spot in the 90th minute to win the game, and when he applied the same technique, Leixoes’ keeper was able to turn the ball away.
