Bruno Fernandes slammed for ‘most embarrassing moment’ of Man Utd’s win over Liverpool

Football fans have slammed Bruno Fernandes for the “worst dive you’ll ever see” after the Manchester United star tumbled to the floor in disgraceful fashion during the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

With compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo dropped to the bench, Fernandes was named captain against United’s fierce rivals, inspiring them to a first win of the new campaign after dismal showings against Brighton and Brentford in their opening two fixtures.

And whilst Liverpool failed to handle Fernandes’ quick tempo passing and neat footwork, the temporary skipper’s ongoing relationship with the Old Trafford turf once again resurfaced when he hit the deck in during the second half of the crunch clash.

Falling in a manner not too dissimilar to that of a sniper’s victim, Fernandes claimed he’d been felled by Andy Robertson in the penalty box but his wry smile made it glaringly obvious he was trying to con referee Michael Oliver. Chief Liverpool Echo writer Ian Doyle was quick to slam the Portuguese midfielder for the clear dive as a barrage of criticism flooded Fernandes’ way on social media.

“Incredible to think the #LFC performance is no longer the most embarrassing thing of the night,” tweeted Doyle. “Fair play to Fernandes for that.” Whilst a second blasted: “Fernandes remains an embarrassment. That touch followed by a dive.”

“That dive by Bruno Fernandes is diabolical,” vented a third. “Retrospective bans need to be brought in for that s***. It’s embarrassing. It’s dirty. And it’s cheating.” A fourth posted: “I’m not sure there’s a more unlikeable player in the Premier League than Bruno Fernandes. All he does is dive and whine to the referee. It’s pathetic.”

Racing out the blocks with the high-pressing frontline of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga, Man Utd bossed Liverpool in the opening exchanges and were a goal to the good after just 15 minutes.

Hitting the post just minutes beforehand, Anthony Elanga’s slick one-two with Christian Eriksen opened up the Merseysiders’ backline and Sancho eased past the attempted sliding challenge from James Milner before cooly slotting into the bottom left corner.

A rejuvenated Rashford then doubled the Red Devils’ advantage eight minutes after half-time, timing his run to perfection and arrowing a shot into the net at the near post.

United, though, were unable to cling onto a first clean sheet of the season as Mohamed Salah‘s 81st-minute header teed up a nervy Old Trafford ending but Jurgen Klopp‘s lacklustre side failed to seriously threaten in the closing stages as Man Utd grasped a first three points of the Ten Hag era.
