DWP confirms exact date 6 million people will get £150 cost of living payment

Six million disabled people will get their £150 cost of living payment from September 20.

DWP chiefs unveiled the date for a one-off payment first announced in the Spring to help vulnerable Brits cope with rising bills.

People on PIP and Attendance Allowance are among those who qualify. But Employment and Support Allowance is not included.

People on income-related ESA were due to get a separate £324 payment in July.

Officials insist the payments will be made “shortly” after September 20 for eligible people who were getting disability benefit on May 25 this year.

It comes as part of a package of support unveiled by former Chancellor Rishi Sunak after months of pressure to ease soaring cost of living pressures.

Mr Sunak was forced to do more after his initial offer of a £200 discount on energy bills – which would be clawed back over time – was derided as insufficient.

Households will now get £400 in non-repayable installments between October and March.

There will also be an extra £150 for properties in council tax bands A-D in England.

Brits receiving means-tested benefits are due payments totalling £650, paid in two installments in the summer and autumn.

But the next PM will be under intense pressure to do more to grapple with worsening conditions as surging gas prices push up energy bills and inflation hits double figures.

Tory frontrunner Liz Truss has pledged to hold an emergency Budget shortly after entering No10 but she has kept details of her cost of living plans under wraps.

Her campaign has focused on slashing taxes, triggering warnings that her plans will either drive up borrowing or require sweeping cuts to public spending.

Chloe Smith, Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work, said: “We know disabled people can face additional costs, which is why we are acting to help reduce the financial pressures on the most vulnerable.

“This £150 disability payment is on top of the £1,200 most low income benefit claimants will also receive and alongside wider support targeted at disabled people, including help with transport and prescription costs.

“We know it’s a worrying time for some people and I’d urge them to check they are getting all the support on offer by searching Help for Households.”

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi said: “We know that rising prices faced by many countries around the world are a significant worry for many people here in the UK, especially those most vulnerable to additional costs.

“Today’s announcement that disabled people will begin to receive an additional £150 payment from the end of September reinforces our commitment to help UK households through the challenging times ahead.”
