Tottenham are contemplating a shock move for Leeds’ Dan James to replace Valencia-bound Bryan Gil

Tottenham are considering a surprise move for Leeds United winger Dan James as they prepare to replace Bryan Gil who is joining Valencia.

Talks have not advanced as Spurs focus on trimming their squad after bringing in seven signings this summer.

With the 21-year-old Spaniard likely headed back to LaLiga, Antonio Conte has been vocal about wanting to replace him, and James is a player who has drawn the interest of the north London club in the past.

Bryan Gil is set for another spell at Valencia after failing to impress Antonio Conte

When questioned on the possibility of Gil leaving the club, Conte said: ‘This squad is this and if someone goes away then another has to come. This has to be very clear for everybody.

‘Otherwise we stay with this squad and we continue our path with these players, this squad. But if someone has to go away, along another must come.

‘This is very clear for me, for the club, but we are totally agreed on this aspect.’

Despite joining the club last summer, Gil failed to impress either Jose Mourinho or Conte, and is set for another spell away after just 20 games and one assist in his fledgling Spurs career.

And Gil is not the only player likely on his way out the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Conte makes it clear who is in his pans for the future.

Sergio Reguilon’s injury is holding up Nottingham Forest’s push to take him on loan, as revealed by Sportsmail, but other clubs remain interested.

The Spanish defender has found himself down the pecking order with Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic ahead of him in the race for the left-wing-back spot, and Lazio and Villarreal have also made enquiries for the 25-year-old.

He is yet to play this season as both player and club search for a solution to his future, and he could soon be moving to Premier League new boys Forest, who are still looking to add to their 16 players brought in this summer.

Mean Spurs defender Marcel Lavinier is a target for Hull City.
