Virgil van Dijk ‘looks like he’s in Oasis’ with static defending for Sancho goal
Virgil van Dijk was caught doing a Liam Gallagher impression as Jadon Sancho put Manchester United ahead during their 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday night.
The Dutchman is undoubtedly one of the best defenders around, but fans were bewildered when he decided not to close Sancho down on the edge of the box, choosing instead to stay rooted to the spot with his arms behind his back, mimicking the iconic on-stage pose of former Oasis front man Gallagher.
“Why was Van Dijk just standing there like he’s the singer in Oasis when he could’ve moved forward to block Sancho’s shot?” one fan tweeted, while another said: “Van Dijk looking like he’s about to sing Wonderwall there.”

“VVD looked like a s*** Oasis tribute act for that goal,” a third wrote.
Fans on social media weren’t the only ones perplexed by Van Dijk’s antics. James Milner, who had thrown himself at Sancho’s dummied shot moments earlier, was seen screaming at his team-mate as United celebrated, appearing to tell him he should’ve “got out” to the United forward to block the strike.
Marcus Rashford doubled United’s lead in the second half and although Mo Salah grabbed a late goal for the visitors, it wasn’t enough to stop Erik ten Hag’s side registering their first points of the season.

Having failed to win any of their opening three matches, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool find themselves in 16th place. United meanwhile have heaved themselves off the foot of the table and into 14th.
Van Dijk prides himself on a passive defending style – where he rarely goes to ground or takes risks – though it’s got him into trouble on a couple of recent occasions – most notably in the Champions League final last season where he chose not to engage Federico Valverde on the edge of Liverpool’s box, affording the Uruguayan enough time and space to pick out Vinicius Jr at the back post for Real Madrid’s winning goal.
