Lionel Messi might be deemed one of the most gifted footballers ever – but his typical post-match meal gives hope to all Sunday League players with aspirations of turning professional.

Now in the twilight years of his career at PSG, the silky Argentine, 35, is still continuing to dazzle defenders on a weekly basis, starring in the Parisian’s 7-1 victory over Lille on Sunday (August 21).

And while his dazzling quicker feet and majestic close-touch dribbling may be difficult for the average Sunday League to replicate, there is one part of Messi’s gameday routine that isn’t unachievable by any stretch of the imagination – his post-match meal.

In arguably the peak of his powers, during Barcelona‘s 2014/15 treble-winning campaign lining up alongside Neymar Jr and Luis Suarez, Messi was asked to request a post-match meal for September and the 5ft 5in magician opted for a simple Margherita pizza.

Often a popular choice following a night on the town, the Italian delicacy is the staple mark of a cheat meal with toppings galore often added to the standard bread, tomato sauce and cheese dish.

Though it’s unsurprisingly a favoured meal for a Sunday League player back at work the following day it is somewhat astonishing that the record-breaking Barca team of 2014 were permitted a pizza from time to time – and it was a common preference amongst the rest of the squad.

Keen to take full advantage of the offer Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Suarez and Neymar all chose differing variations of pizzas with Busquets also ordering a side of fruit containing “ONLY PINEAPPLE AND STRAWBERRY.”

Bizarrely, a popular option amongst defenders seemed to be a Nutella sandwich with Marc-André ter Stegen, Gerard Piqué and Sergio Roberto seemingly all big fans of the chocolate hazelnut treat.

Ever the professional, Javier Mascherano opted for a pasta salad and two pieces of fruit – boring.
