Virgil van Dijk failed to make a single tackle during Liverpool’s defeat to Man Utd

Virgil van Dijk did not make a single tackle during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Monday.

The defender, considered one of the greatest to ever grace the Premier League, failed to rob the ball off a United player at Old Trafford – while other statistics also show that it was not the Dutchman’s night. Squawka’s data shows Van Dijk failed in the two tackles he tried to make, that he was dribbled past once, and conceded a foul.

Some have claimed that the centre-back was at fault for the opening goal. Jadon Sancho found himself inside the box and, having dropped James Milner to the floor with an audacious feint, the attacker was able bury an easy shot into the net as Van Dijk did not close him down and instead stood idly with his hands behind his back.

One said on Twitter: “John terry would rather break his head than allow someone to have a free shot at goal. Never put him in the same breath as Van dijk again.”

Another wrote: “Van Dijk is an absolute mannequin. Can’t believe this guy was compared to all time greats like Sergio Ramos after one or two world class seasons.”

James Milner had some words to say

A third said: “One day we’re gonna sit back with a cuppa n biscuits and think about times when Van Dijk was genuinely being called the greatest defender ever. One day.”

Those online were not the only ones to point out the flaws of Van Dijk’s game last night. Indeed, team-mate Milner made his annoyance known in no uncertain terms after the goal. Cameras caught him berating the defender after conceding the first goal.

Marcus Rashford secured three points for United, doubling their lead in the second half. Mohamed Salah’s goal late on was nothing more than a consolation for the Reds.

Liverpool are yet to win a game after three league matches, while United have found their first three points in a competitive game under Ten Hag.
