Newcastle to smash transfer record to sign striker that Arsenal and Man Utd wanted

Newcastle are ready to smash their transfer record to sign Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad who has previously been linked to their Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

The 6ft 4in forward has managed 44 goals for his La Liga side since leaving Borussia Dortmund back in 2019 – scoring once across his two domestic outings this season.

The 22-year-old, who earned rave reviewers for his performances at Euro 2020 last year, is set to cost Eddie Howe’s side a mammoth fee in the region of £60million according to the Athletic.

That is a large chunk more than the club paid for Joelinton back in 2019, with the Brazilian forward turned midfielder costing them £40m from Hoffenheim.

Daily Star Sport understood back in March that United entered the race for Isak having realised that they could not beat Manchester City to the signing of Erling Haaland.

Arsenal had been linked with a move for the towering striker a few months earlier, but were said to be put off by his then-£75m release clause with his contract running until 2026.

One big fan of the young forward is Sweden international icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has kept a keen eye on Isak since he was a teen rising up the ranks.

Ibrahimovic said when Isak was just 16: “I have seen him in action and he is fantastic.”

Isak has managed nine goals across his 37 caps for his country, netting four times in qualification for the 2022 World Cup – before they were knocked out in the play-offs.

Isak said in a chat with the Independent last year: “I’m in a good place at the moment, I’m very happy, but one day it would be nice to play in England as well.

“They have six or seven of the biggest clubs in the world, it’s a very high level, and of course one day it would be an alternative.

“Every player wants to be the best version of themselves and reach the highest possible level. I have expectations for myself that I’m trying to fulfil, so we’ll see where the journey takes me in future.”
