‘PM clocked off before his shift ended leaving Brits to deal with cost of living crisis’

On Friday regulator Ofgem is expected to lift the cap on energy bills to £3,500.

If we had a functioning government this could have been averted, preventing millions more households from being plunged into fuel poverty.

Instead, the country has been left rudderless. Boris Johnson has effectively clocked off before his shift is over. The self-indulgent Tory leadership contest means his successor will not be in place for another 12 days.

The ruling party has failed to grasp that action is needed now.

Families are going without food. The elderly are using candles and households are rationing hot water and turning off electric appliances.

People are working all the hours they can, many taking on second or third jobs, and they still cannot cover the cost of their energy bills.

How do the Tories expect them to cope when bills rise to an average of £300 a month?

Stand firm

The people of Ukraine stood defiant yesterday as they marked their country’s 31 years of independence.

For the past six months they have fought valiantly to defend their freedom.

The Ukrainian armed forces have suffered an estimated 10,000 deaths, while more than 5,500 civilians have been killed, including hundreds of children.

Despite these tragic loses the Ukrainians have shown remarkable bravery and resilience.

Vladmir Putin underestimated their resolve and misjudged the unity of their allies.

Britain, Europe and America yesterday pledged their continued support.

The economic cost will be painful but it is nothing compared with the sacrifice made by Ukraine in its fight to remain independent.
