Liverpool fans can’t believe they’ve never played Rangers as Champions League clash set

Liverpool fans are brimming with excitement at a first UK derby between themselves and Rangers after the British giants were placed in the same group during Thursday evening’s Champions League draw.

The six-time European Cup winners were joined in Group A by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side following Rangers’ 3-2 aggregate victory over PSV in their final qualification match, triggering a return to Europe’s top-tier competition after an 11-year absence.

The Gers are also joined in the group stage by Celtic, who qualified for the last 32-stage by pipping their city rivals to the Scottish Premiership title last season. The Bhoys were placed in Group F alongside RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk and 14-time winners and current holders Real Madrid.

With the only meetings between Rangers and Liverpool occurring as friendly matches – the last during the 2011/12 season – fans of both sides are already gearing up with anticipation ahead of the historic showdown between Scotland and England’s most successful clubs.

“I find it quite remarkable that two clubs of the size, stature and history of Liverpool and Rangers have never met before. It should make for a great atmosphere in the Champions League this season,” tweeted one supporter.

“What a glamour draw for Rangers. Amazing! Battle of Britain between Stevie G’s 2 favourite clubs, Ajax and Napoli,” praised a second. “Ibrox. Anfield. Two of the most daunting football stadiums for visiting teams. Unreal,” harked a third.
