Police officer who urinated inside Urban Outfitters keeps job in ‘rehabilitation’ hopes

A police officer who urinated while inside of an Urban Outfitters has kept her job over hopes of “rehabilitation”.

A disciplinary panel found that PC Amelia Shearer was guilty of gross misconduct following the incident in the York branch of the Urban Outfitters chain last September.

She was issued with a final written warning after the retail chain had to fork out £492 for a professional cleaner to mop up the mess found in one changing room.

The rest of the changing rooms were closed while the cleaning was undertaken, and Shearer had initially lied to the hearing about what she had done.

Panel chair Ogheneruona Iguyovwe said allegations of discreditable conduct and breaches of honesty and integrity were proven, but after hours of deliberations, the panel decided not to rule that Shearer should be sacked.

Iguyovwe said: “She is 24-years-old. There is scope for her to be rehabilitated, there is scope for her to set the record straight and to begin on a new path.”

Shearer, who joined Cleveland Police in 2019, had been given a number of opportunities to come clean about what happened, the panel said.

They added that while she was under investigation for criminal damage, she had lied under caution.

During the three-day hearing, it was heard that Shearer had downed half a bottle of Prosecco, three cocktails and then a Jack Daniels and Coke at a separate venue to her four-hour bottomless brunch before entering the Urban Outfitters.

Shearer had entered the changing rooms reportedly without any clothing to adjust her bra, she claims, although upon leaving the fitting room, employees noted a puddle of liquid on the floor and could smell urine.

The 24-year-old denied urinating but acknowledged she and her friend were “loud and giggly”, LADBible reported.

Shearer was reportedly left in tears by the panel’s conclusion, with representative for the force Olivia Checa-Dover saying the 24-year-old was “undeployable” due to her being dishonest.
