Brits jump to defence of Harry Styles after backlash from US fans over ‘bizarre’ accent in new film
Britons have come to the defence of Cheshire-born Harry Styles in a new clip for his latest film Don’t Worry Darling after social media erupted over his accent.
The actor, 28, stars alongside Florence Pugh, 26, in the psychological thriller – directed by his girlfriend Olivia Wide – which is set in California in the 1950s.
A clip from the upcoming film was shared on social media and fans have been left divided over Harry’s accent – with some claiming he is doing a bad imitation of an American accent, while others insisted his character is supposed to be British.
In the clip, Harry and Florence – who play a young married couple named Jack and Alice – are seen arguing over Jack’s job.
He says: ‘Not everyone gets this opportunity and if you keep talking like this, you’re going to put it all at risk.’

Alice replies: ‘You’re worried about a demotion, that’s what you’re worried about?’
Jack says: ‘Our life, Alice! Our life together, this, I could lose this.
Florence, who is also English, does a noticably American accent in the film while viewers thought Harry seemed to try out a few different twangs.
Reacting to the clip, one Twitter user said: ‘Wow he really said Mr Worldwide with this accent flyover’.
Another user said: ‘American accent where?’ while another asked: ‘Is he meant to be English in it?’
One fan wrote: ‘When I tell you I wasn’t ready for Jack I wasn’t ready for Jack,’ to which someone else replied: ‘I don’t think anybody is ready for that “accent”‘.
Another Twitter user said: ‘What’s wrong with his accent?’ to which another replied: ‘Which one?’

But Brits have fiercely defended the singer-actor on Twitter, who argue that he wasn’t trying to do an American accent in the first place.
Responding to someone who said of the clip: ‘Yorkshire to Boston to he Bronx to the Gold Coast in one take,’ a user called Nikki said: ‘I’m not one for defending Harry Styles but he’s from Cheshire and 10 minutes where I’m from…
‘A lot of us sound like this it’s just Americans don’t know an English accent unless it’s a London/posh Tory southern accent.’
Similarly, Katie said: ‘Me watching every[one] slate Harry Styles’ accent when it’s literally my accent.’
Another user said she was going ‘insane’ at the claims he was doing a rubbish American accent attempt: ‘Why are people so loud and wrong on the internet it’s so second embarrassing…
‘This Harry Styles accent thing is driving me up the f*****g wall bc that’s literally just his voice WTF do you mean?????? What accent is it? A f*****g British one bc he’s British.’

One person said: ‘I didn’t just see someone calling Harry Styles’ accent in the Don’t Worry Darling clip bad… baby girl that’s his accent…’
A user called Ellis took it one step further and said of a US woman who said Styles’ accent was all over the place: ‘Americans have to be the stupidest people of all time.
‘Harry Styles, a British person, speaking in his normal British accent? Like holy s**t other accents exist.’
Those who aren’t particular fans of the singer still corrected those believing Styles was trying to do an American accent, with one saying: ‘Not that I’m a Harry Styles trooper but this is just a northern English accent ma’am.’
Another said: ‘I don’t think Harry Styles is doing an accent in that clip, isn’t it just his actual voice?’
One other similarly said: ‘Okay I get the Harry Styles slander and I’m keeping my mouf shut cause, baby, but I don’t think he’s trying to do an accent I think he’s just talking guys…’
A fan wrote: ‘To everyone everywhere: Harry Styles is SUPPOSED to have his NATURAL ACCENT in Don’t Worry Darling.
‘If I see another person tweet about how “he’s doing an awful job with the American accent” I’ll lose it.’

‘Takes me back to drama school when a certain director told me my northern accent was ‘wrong’!? This IS what we sound like in the North-West, you’ve just been exposed to shite impersonations in the past.’
In the film, Florence’s character Alice begins to suspect the company her husband Jack owns is harbouring a dark secret.
Don’t Worry Darling began shooting in Los Angeles in late 2020 but production was shut down for two weeks after someone on set tested positive for Covid-19.
It wrapped production in February 2021 and also stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Olivia.
The film sparked a bidding war among 18 studios who were all keen to acquire the project with New Line Cinema winning the auction.
Don’t Worry Darling is scheduled to be released on September 23.
