Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez is ‘finalizing contract extension worth as much as $450m’

Seattle Mariners rookie sensation Julio Rodriguez is reportedly finalizing a massive contract extension with $200 million guaranteed, with the possibility of exceeding $450 million in total.

Rodriguez, the 21-year-old known as ‘J-Rod,’ has not officially signed yet, but according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez and ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal is near completion.

The native of the Dominican Republic recently hit his 20th home run on the season to become just the fourth rookie in MLB history with 20 homers and stolen bases in the same season. The others are Mitchell Page (1977 Athletics), Ellis Burks (1987 Red Sox) and Marty Cordova (1995 Twins).

‘I’m happy about it,’ Rodriguez said. ‘Not a lot of people do it all the time.’

Rodriguez not only leads all rookies in home runs, but also has 23 stolen bases on the year.
