Prince William and Kate Middleton: A royal relationship in photos

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been together for almost 20 years, having grown together from university students to a married couple with three children.

William and Kate met in their first year at the University of St Andrews and were photographed together for the first time on a ski holiday in Klosters, Switzerland, in 2004, and looked loved-up at their graduation the following year.

The relationship was obviously serious but it was still many years before William would propose. The delay prompted Kate to be given the nickname ‘Waity Katie’ in the press. 

In 2007, William and Kate’s relationship hit a brief road bump when the pair briefly split. However they soon rekindled their romance and in October 2010, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton. 

Kate Middleton exchanged vows with William in a Westminster Abbey wedding in April 2011 and it wasn’t long before they started a family together. Their son Prince George was born in July 2013. His sister Princess Charlotte was born in May 2015, followed by Prince Louis in April 2018.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge now live with their three children between their home in Kensington Palace and their country home at Sandringham, the Queen’s Norfolk estate. 

Prince William and Kate Middleton have taken on key roles within the Royal Family and joined the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Platinum Jubilee.

22 AUGUST, 2022:  William and Kate announce plans to move to Windsor and Prince George, Charlotte and Louis’ new school

It was confirmed Prince William and Kate Middleton will move with their three children George, Charlotte and Louis to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor and send them to the prestigious £21,000-a-year Lambrook School nearby. Sources said the decision had been made as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are seeking a life away from the ‘fishbowl’ of their current official residence of Kensington Palace in London in a bid to put their children first and give the ‘most normal’ life possible.

2 AUGUST, 2022: William and Kate make first solo outing with Princess Charlotte to the Commonwealth Games 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their daughter Princess Charlotte to the Commonwealth Games. It marked the princess’s first outing with her parents without her brothers Prince George and Prince Louis. The young royal delighted spectators as she pulled faces while watching the swimming, gymnastics and hockey. Fans commented on Prince William’s close bond with his daughter.

10 JULY, 2022: William and Kate take Prince George to Wimbledon for the first time

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made it a family day out when they brought Prince George along to watch Novak Djokovic win the men’s singles final at Wimbledon. After the match, the couple introduced their son to the tennis ace. The Duchess of Cambridge looked elegant in a polka dot Alessandra Rich ensemble.

5 JULY, 2022: Kate and William at Wimbledon 

Prince William and Kate Middleton looked stylish as they arrived at Wimbledon for their first appearance at the tournament in 2022. An avid tennis fan, Kate attends several days of the competition. The Duchess of Cambridge was chic in a £1,515 Alessandra Rich dress. 

5 JUNE, 2022: Platinum Jubilee Pageant

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are joined by their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Little Prince Louis stole the show with his hilarious facial expressions.

4 JUNE, 2022: Prince George and Princess Charlotte join their parents in Wales 

Prince George and Princess Charlotte delighted royal fans when they accompanied their parents Prince William and Kate Middleton to Cardiff in a visit celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The young royals joined their parents on a walkabout and took part in activities.

Kate Middleton and Prince William were joined by their two eldest children Prince George and Princess Charlotte for the memorial service for Prince Philip. The family walked hand-in-hand into Westminster Abbey in London and appeared in good spirits as they chatted with one another. 25 MARCH, 2022: Prince William and Kate Middleton on Caribbean royal tour 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited countries including the Bahamas and Jamaica on a Caribbean royal tour to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The couple put on a rare PDA when they held hands during a black tie reception in the Bahamas. The Duchess of Cambridge dazzled in an ice blue gown. 

10 December, 2021: Kate and Prince William release Christmas card photograph taken during their trip to Jordan

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released their Christmas card photograph in early December, with a stunning snap of the family during their summer holidays in Jordan.  The Cambridges appeared with their three children in the family snap.

1 November, 2021: Kate and William attend the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference 

William and Kate attended the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference. William was inspired by US President John F Kennedy’s Moonshot – which aimed to put a man on the moon – to create a prize centred on five Earthshot goals for the planet to prompt people and businesses to drive change. 

28 SEPTEMBER, 2021: William and Kate dazzle at the No Time To Die premiere 

Wearing a bespoke Jenny Packham evening dress, Kate outshines the celebrities as she joins William at the world premiere of the latest James Bond film No Time To Die at the Royal Albert Hall in September 2021. 26 MAY, 2021: Prince William and Kate return to St Andrews to mark their 10th wedding anniversary 

Competitive Kate Middleton was in her element as she and Prince William went head-to-head in a land yacht race in St Andrews in May 2021. The Duchess of Cambridge beamed as she steered the wind-powered go-kart down West Sands Beach – just a short drive from the university where she and William met as students 20 years before. 

29 April, 2021: Duke and Duchess celebrate their 10 year wedding anniversary

17 April, 2021: Prince William and Kate attend Prince Philip’s funeral

Kate Middleton and Prince William were among the mourners who came together to support the Queen at a socially-distanced funeral for Prince Philip at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The Duchess teamed a chic black £1,605 Roland Mouret dress with an asymmetrical neckline with a black face covering and a Philip Treacy velvet pillbox hat for the occasion. 

5 March, 2021: Kate and William conduct a virtual engagement during the Covid-19 pandemic

7 October, 2020: Kate and William host Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at Buckingham Palace

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tried out hurling during a visit to a local Gaelic Athletic Association during their visit to Ireland in March 2020. There was no set scoring… although Kate looks disappointed with her attempt in this photo.

 

15 OCTOBER, 2019: William and Kate on a royal tour of Pakistan 

In 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge put on a dazzling display on their royal tour of Pakistan. It marked the first official visit to the country by the British Royal Family in more than a decade. The couple met local people and enjoyed displays of the vibrant local culture.

8 AUGUST, 2019: William and Kate make a family visit to the Isle of Wight

Prince William and Kate Middleton were among the senior royals who attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The Duchess of Cambridge opted for a pastel yellow Alexander McQueen coat dress for the occasion. 

24 April, 2018: Kate and Prince William welcome their third child, Prince Louis

Kate Middleton gave birth to the healthy baby boy, Prince Louis, at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. She was joined by Prince William to pose for snaps on the steps with their newborn son. Her later revealed how Prince George and Prince Charlotte were ‘delighted’ at the arrival of their little brother who was born at 11.01am as he gave his first royal wave to an adoring public.  The beaming parents looked delighted as they showed off their third son to the world who was born weighing 8lbs 7oz on St George’s Day.

30 JANUARY, 2018: William and Kate on a royal tour of Norway 

On the first day of their royal tour of Sweden and Norway, in 2018, competition was brewing. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took part in a hockey penalty shootout at an outdoor ice skating venue in Stockholm. It was one of a number of activities they carried out during the tour. 

25 DECEMBER, 2017: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge join Royal Family for Christmas at Sandringham 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge stood alongside Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle during their first Christmas at Sandringham, Norfolk, at the traditional service at St Mary Magdalene church.

5 FEBRUARY, 2017: William and Kate race at Heads Together event in London 

A bit of competitive banter at the starting line, as William and Kate line up when joining a London Marathon training session in 2017. Kate, in her New Balance trainers and black skinny jeans, arguably looked the sportier of the pair at the event to promote their mental health charity, Heads Together. But in the end, it was William’s younger brother Prince Harry, who romped to victory, with William second, closely followed by Kate.

1 OCTOBER, 2016: William and Kate’s royal tour of Canada with Prince George and Princess Charlotte 

William and Kate brought their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte with them on their royal tour of Canada in 2016. Little Prince George practised his wave as the family touched down and Princess Charlotte was taken to play with the children of military families.

22 April, 2016: Kate and William welcome President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle to their home

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge invited President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle for a private dinner at their London home, Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace. Later, the couple shared a number of images from the event, revealing a glimpse into their private life. The room in which they sat for drinks was one of 22 inside the couple’s private apartment which once belonged to Princess Margaret. 

14 APRIL, 2016: William and Kate on a royal tour of Bhutan 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge flew out to Bhutan for a royal tour in 2016. Among the stops on the tour of India and Bhutan was the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, one of the scenes of the 2008 terror attacks in which 164 people died.

3 MARCH, 2016: William and Kate’s ski holiday in the Alps 

Looking like loved-up teenagers, William and Kate threw snow and cuddled each other in a playful photoshoot on their holiday in the French Alps. The couple invited photographers to capture the moment then enjoyed their trip away in peace. 

5 July, 2015: Prince William and Kate are joined by royal family for Princess Charlotte’s christening 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge gathered friends and family at St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham for the private ceremony for Princess Charlotte’s christening. The event was attended by just 21 official guests including the Queen and Prince Philip. Kate, dressed all in ivory and wore earrings and a necklace by Mappin & Webb. 

2 May, 2015: Kate Middleton and Prince William welcome their second baby, Princess Charlotte

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome their second baby, Princess Charlotte. In a statement issued on the couple’s behalf they said the congratulations of people around the world meant ‘a great deal’ to them as thousands continued to celebrate the little princess’s birth. She was born at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital weighing 8lbs and 3oz.

20 APRIL, 2014: Prince George joins William and Kate in Australia for first royal tour

Baby Prince George was not even a year old when he was taken to Australia for his first royal tour. Proud parents William and Kate delighted royal fans by recreating some of the photographs from the royal tour taken by Prince Charles and Princess Diana when Prince William was just a baby.

23 October, 2013: Prince William and Kate Middleton at Prince George’s Christening

Prince William and Kate Middleton were joined by the Queen and other members of the royal family for the christening of their son Prince George at the Royal Chapel in St James Palace. The three-month-old future king was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury, wearing a handmade replica of Queen Victoria’s daughter’s christening robe. 

23 July, 2013: Kate leaves hospital with Prince William after giving birth to Prince George 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left The Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital after she gave birth to their first son, Prince George. Kate later revealed that debuting her three children to the world on the steps of the Lindo Wing just hours after giving birth was ‘terrifying’.

3 December, 2012: William and Kate announce they are expecting their first baby 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced the news they were expecting their first baby together after Kate was admitted into King Edward VII hospital with acute morning sickness. She suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum throughout all three of her pregnancies. The Duchess was discharged on 6 December.  

15 SEPTEMBER, 2012: William and Kate take a Diamond Jubilee tour to Malaysia 

On one of their early overseas tours as a couple, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Malaysia, Singapore, the Solomon Islands and Tuvalu as part of events marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. 

2 AUGUST, 2012: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the London 2012 Olympics 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Prince Harry and other members of the Royal Family to take in the action at the London 2012 Olympics. The couple, then married for a little over a year, put on rare displays of affection as they hugged each other in the stands. 

June 16, 2012: Kate and Will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at Trooping the Colour 

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined other members of the royal family to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at a number of events, including Trooping the Colour. Kate and Prince William beamed with joy on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as they stood alongside the Queen as she marked 60 years on the throne. 

25 December, 2011: Kate joins Prince William and the royal family for Christmas at Sandringham 

The new-Duchess of Cambridge appeared in high spirits as she joined Prince William at the Christmas Day service at church in Sandringham. The couple joined Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Camilla to walk to the occasion. Kate Middleton opted for a plum purple coat for the outing which she paired with a matching fascinator.  

9 JULY, 2011: William and Kate meet celebrities on royal visit to Los Angeles 

Just months after their April 2011 wedding, William and Kate jetted out to Canada and the US for their first royal tour as a couple. In Los Angeles, it was a glitzy affair for the newlywedded Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. At one BAFTA event they met celebrities including Jennifer Lopez. 

4 JULY, 2011: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit Canada on first royal tour 

Starting as they mean to go on! Whether it is Scrabble or sport, William and Kate both like to win. In 2011, it was William who triumphed when the pair went head-to-head in a dragon boat race in Canada – their first royal tour as a married couple 

29 April, 2011: Kate and William marry at Westminster Abbey 

Prince William and Kate Middleton wed in front of 2,000 guests at Westminster Abbey in London. The new Duchess of Cambridge wore a £250,000 gown by Alexander McQueen. The couple thrilled royal fans when they shared their first kiss as a married couple on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, much to the delight of cheering onlookers outside the Palace gates and beyond. 

24 February, 2011: Kate joins William at her first royal engagement in Anglesey

In her first ever royal engagement, Kate Middleton joined Prince William to launch a lifeboat at Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station in Anglesey. Then-28, Kate christened the boat with champagne before chatting to locals in the crowd.

16 November, 2010: Kate and William announce they are engaged to marry 

Prince William and Kate Middleton announce they are engaged and plan to marry the following year. The couple reveal William, then-28, proposed during a holiday in Kenya after asking Kate’s father Michael for his daughter’s hand.  Kate, also 28, had been dubbed ‘Waity Katy’ amid criticism she was hanging on for a proposal and did not have a proper job but now her wait is finally over.

July 2007: William and Kate are seen for the first time since their split 

Following their reunion, William and Kate tried not to make it too obvious, but they were together one month later, on July 7, when Princes William and Harry stood on stage at Wembley in front of 63,000 people to honour the 10-year anniversary of their mother’s death. Harry sat next to his girlfriend while William sat next to his best friend Thomas van Straubenzee. Two rows behind was Kate Middleton. 

June, 2007: The prince and girlfriend Kate Middleton reunite

After two months apart, William and Kate reportedly reunited at a party at William’s barracks to celebrate the end of training. The theme was ‘Freakin’ Naughty’ and William wore hot pants, vest and a policeman’s helmet, while Kate was dressed as a naughty nurse. They rekindled their romance and the rest is history. 

April, 2007: Time apart 

William and Kate spent time apart. The prince was spotted partying in London and Bournemouth while Kate was seen in Mahiki with Henry Ropner. Sources close to the couple said the split had been ‘mutual’ and they both agreed not to talk about their four-year relationship.

14 April, 2007: Prince William and Kate Middleton split announced 

Prince William and his long-term love Kate Middleton split following the strain caused by the second in line to the throne’s life in the Army. The couple, then aged 24 and 25, came to the agreement together and had an amicable split with no one else involved. 

15 December, 2006: Middletons watch Prince William’s passing out parade and rumours of a wedding heat up

Kate Middleton made her first appearance with the Royal Family to watch Prince William’s passing out parade at Sandhurst. Glamorous Kate joined the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles at the event, although she attended with her parents Carole and Michael Middleton. The seriousness of the outing was taken as a sign the couple could one day marry.

June, 2005: Kate and William graduate from St Andrew’s University 

Prince William and Kate Middleton looked affectionate as they posed for their first ever publicly released photograph together while graduating from St Andrew’s University. The couple had met as friends in halls before they fell in love and moved in together.
