Tennis superstar Emma Raducanu spotted in tears just days before US Open

British tennis megastar Emma Raducanu was spotted in tears leaving practice on Tuesday – just days before her US Open defence.

Raducanu was the superstar of Flushing Meadows 12 months ago when she overcame Leylah Fernandez to win her first Grand Slam. However, the Brit has struggled with injuries over the past 12 months, and she was unceremoniously dumped out of Wimbledon in June.

Raducanu was snapped in tears as she walked away from training – appearing to be in discomfort. Raducanu could be seen with two fingers strapped up and her wrist tapped on her right arm: her serving hand.

Raducanu crashed out of the Australian Open in January due to blisters on her fingers and hand. She said in Melbourne: “It’s just the position of it. It’s right in the crease of the palm, it’s so deep.

“I just can’t grip the racket. Like every time I hit, every time I make contact with the ball, it creates an impact.

“If I hit one slightly off centre and the racket moves a bit in my hand, it’s even more friction and it rips again. So it’s very painful, every single shot I hit.”

Raducanu is scheduled to face Alize Cornet in the first round on Monday as she hopes to replicate her fairytale run to the final last year.

Raducanu heads into Flushing Meadows as the 11th ranked seed, while Cornet could prove to be a tricky opponent with the Frenchwoman coming into New York ranked 37 in the world.
