Gary Lineker jokes about having ‘brown heat map’ after pooing on pitch

Gary Lineker had Ian Wright howling with laughter last night as he dropped a hilarious joke about his antics involving pooing on the pitch when he was still playing.

The former Leicester City and Barcelona striker joked about the infamous moment the now 61-year-old pooed himself playing for England at Italia ’90 while playing against Ireland in Cagliari. During last night’s Match of the Day, Ian Wright was analysing Erling Haaland’s heat map for Manchester City as they thumped Crystal Palace 4-2, with thanks to a hattrick from the Norwegian.

While looking at the former Borussia Dortmund striker’s heat map, Wright compared it to Lineker’s movements, before he quickly cut in and said “there would be a bit of brown on there if it was mine”.

Wright and Jermaine Jenas lost it and sat there in fits of laughter, with people absolutely loving it at home. @dktorode tweeted: “Ian Wright is such a gem.”

@StuPollock1 wrote: “Brilliant man” followed by laughing emojis and clapping emojis.

Lineker himself even had something to say about it on Twitter, with him posting: “An attempt at self-defecation.”

The ex-England forward, who boasts 80 caps for his country, cleared up the debacle in 2020 when he spoke openly about what happened. On an episode of Match of the Day that highlighted the top 10 craziest moments in Premier League history, Lineker recalled the incident.

He said: “I’d been ill overnight and it was the opening day of the cup and I’d woken up a few times with diarrhoea, etc. I didn’t want to tell Bobby Robson because I thought he might leave me out the team, and I wanted to play, as always.

“Anyway, the game started and I was alright then about 20 minutes in I started cramping. Somehow I made it through to half-time and I thought I’d be alright. We go out for the second half, we’re 10 or 15 minutes in and I’m starting to cramp again and I think, ‘oh, I’m in trouble here’.

“The ball went down the Irish left-hand side and I ran across and tried to block something. I sort of fell to the ground and relaxed for a second and it just went ‘boom’! It was like, ‘oh my god’, but it was like everywhere. There’s a bit, if you ever see the footage, where Gary Stevens comes over and asks what’s wrong.

“And I go, ‘I’ve s*** myself!’. I just didn’t know what to do. Thank god for had dark blue shorts on that day. I’m shovelling it out and rubbing myself on the grass like a dog. It was amazing how much space I found after that though, I was stinking!”
