Man Utd and Chelsea-linked Frenkie de Jong ‘flying to London’ days before Deadline Day

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong is reportedly on his way to London amid speculation linking him with moves to Manchester United and Chelsea.

The Dutchman was spotted arriving at Barcelona Airport with his girlfriend on Monday while lugging a hefty-looking suitcase into the terminal, though it’s understood he’s flying to the UK to attend former team-mate Donny van de Beek’s wedding, and not to secure a move to the Premier League.

De Jong’s future at Barcelona has been hanging in the balance all summer following a tense contract standoff with the club, though recent reports claim the 25-year-old has now agreed to stay.

Barcelona told the midfielder to either take a pay cut or leave as they scrambled for funds to register their new summer signings, though De Jong – who is still owed around £14million in deferred wages – has been standing his ground.

The ugly saga has seen De Jong get abused by angry Barcelona supporters, who demanded he lower his salary while shouting obscenities at him outside the club’s training ground earlier this month, though with just a few days before the window closes, the likelihood of a move away is diminishing quickly.

Erik ten Hag made De Jong his number one transfer target after joining United, though their pursuit hasn’t gone to plan.

They agreed a £70million deal for him in July, though it’s understood De Jong rejected the move outright, preferring to wait for Chelsea instead.

The Blues are yet to table an official bid for the Dutchman, but their interest in him is genuine, and should he decide to quit Barcelona, Chelsea will fancy their chances of landing him, though with every passing day, that looks increasingly unlikely.
