Rookie NFL star ‘shot in attempted robbery’ just days before new season

A talented NFL prospect is being treated in hospital after being shot during an ‘attempted armed robbery or carjacking’, his team has confirmed.

Brian Robinson Jr, 23, was expected to feature for the Washington Commanders this season after signing a four-year rookie contract in May. A statement from the Washington Commanders said: “We have been made aware that Brian Robinson, Jr, was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, DC.

“He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated in hospital, where team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time.”

Robinson was a third-round draft pick for the Commanders and has impressed during pre-season games and training camp.

Head coach Ron Rivera visited Robinson in hospital, he tweeted: “He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support. He wants his team-mates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all and will be back soon doing what he does best.”

Robinson was preparing for his first season in the NFL after signing from college side Alabama. He helped Alabama to two college football national championships and was named most valuable player in last season’s Cotton Bowl Classic.

The running back was hoping to replace Antonio Gibson as a first choice for the Commanders this season. The NFL season begins on September 8.
