Dietmar Hamann urges Liverpool to sign Joelinton as Jurgen Klopp rushes to solve midfield crisis

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann has urged the Reds to sign Newcastle ace Joelinton to solve their midfield issues.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to bolster his ranks before Thursday’s transfer deadline as his team continue to struggle in the middle of the park.

Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all currently out injured, while Jordan Henderson, 32, and James Milner, 36, have failed to put in the performances expected at the very highest level as their age catches up with them.

Sportsmail understands that Klopp is unlikely to get his wish as there is no Champions League-standard player who is immediately available.

Nonetheless, Hamann believes that the Reds should go after Joelinton – who has been a different player since transitioning from a forward to a midfielder.

‘I watched Newcastle United versus Manchester City last week and looking at that I think they need a midfielder with presence,’ the German told GGRecon. ‘You look at Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Thiago, they’re all similar, tidy players.

‘I think they could do with someone like Joelinton from Newcastle. I think he’s someone who’s technically gifted, who’s a big lad, and has a great strike on him. I think that’s the type of player they miss.

‘Whether you can get him now with a few days of the transfer window left to go, I’m not too sure. If there’s one area where they could do with a player, it’s in midfield.’

Joelinton, 26, struggled in his first two seasons at Newcastle following a club record £40million move from Hoffenheim in 2019.

However, Eddie Howe has transformed the goal-shy Brazilian striker into a box-to-box midfielder and he has excelled.

He was named as Newcastle’s Player of the Year last season after reinventing himself in a new role.
