MLB: San Francisco-San Diego game delayed TWICE due to light outage & umpire as Padres topple Giants

Monday night’s critical NL West clash was halted twice in the space of three innings after plate umpire Marvin Hudson injured himself and lights summarily went out inside the Giants’ stadium.

Hudson hurt himself in the bottom of the first and in the top of the third, the game was halted for 40 minutes when some of the ballpark light banks went out.

Though it wasn’t all bad, with many inside San Francisco’s Oracle Park entertained by the theatrics going on inside the stadium.

During the lengthy delay, Journey’s When the Lights Go Down in the City was played along with Ellie Goulding‘s Lights also blaring through the speakers, in which some of the globes did indeed return to working order.

The official Twitter account of Padres stadium, Petco Park, poked fun at the Giants during proceedings — in which San Diego retweeted — showcasing their perfectly capable lighting system.

‘Just going to leave this here @OracleSF,’ the tweet read.

Prior to the partial blackout, umpire Hudson injured himself in the game’s embryonic stages, falling awkwardly in what would be a game-ending injury.

Second base umpire John Tumpane quickly got himself re-dressed and took over home plate duties.

The Padres pushed past the San Francisco Giants 6-5 and remained seemingly unaffected by the interruptions.

‘This was a very frequent occurrence, but it was rain,’ Padres pitcher Mike Clevinger said about his nearly five seasons in Cleveland.

‘It was either rain on the forecast or rain happening.’

Giants manager Gabe Kapler still hopes his team has enough fight to make a September push.

The defending NL West champions, who won a franchise-best 107 games last year, haven’t strung together enough consistent elements to win regularly.

‘I think we can definitely do better at bouncing back from the tough stretch and I think that we´re sitting at the end of August,’ Kapler said.

‘There’s still a lot of baseball left to be played and we´re gonna have lots of opportunities to be better at bouncing back.’
