Brendan Rodgers could pocket huge windfall if Leicester wield axe after ‘El Sackio’

Brendan Rodgers is the overwhelming favourite to become the next Premier League manager to face the sack, but he certainly won’t be leaving Leicester empty handed if they decide to pull the plug.

Scott Parker became the first managerial casualty of the season shortly after Bournemouth were thumped 9-0 by Liverpool, but he could be followed by either Rodgers or Steven Gerrard in the coming weeks. Both Rodgers and Gerrard are under increasing pressure due to poor starts, and the pair face one another on Saturday.

Leicester’s clash against Aston Villa has been labelled as ‘El Sackio’ by fans, with both teams at the wrong end of the Premier League table. But Rodgers is set for a mammoth pay-out should Leicester bosses decide to cut ties with the Northern Irishman.

Rodgers penned a new deal back in 2019 that meant he would stay at the King Power until 2025, but Leicester are now in a difficult situation as they must pay him £10million if they decide to relieve him of his duties. Leicester only made two signings this summer, as finances meant that they were in for a quiet window, until Wesley Fofana was bought by Chelsea for £75m.

It was only then that Leicester dipped into their pockets, and they signed Belgian defender Wout Faes for £15m from Stade Reims, but they may have to dip further into the Fofana profits should Rodgers be given the sack. Rodgers delivered Leicester’s first ever FA Cup crown just two seasons ago, but with the Foxes sat at the bottom of the Premier League, it’s all gone wrong.

Brendan Rodgers is under serious pressure at Leicester

Should Rodgers go, it would be the tenth biggest pay-off in football history, and the eighth biggest sum seen in the Premier League. Antonio Conte holds the record for the biggest sum recieved after being sacked, as Chelsea had to fork out £28.2m back in 2018.

In fact, Chelsea embarrassingly are responsible for five of the top ten biggest managerial pay-offs in football history, although that would be cut to four if Rodgers is axed by Leicester. The Foxes are known for their shrewd business, but this would be a bitter pill to swallow for the owners.

Antonio Conte was paid an eye-watering fee by Chelsea in 2018

The £10m severance package that Rodgers would be entitled to is 25 times the amount that Leicester paid for Riyad Mahrez back in 2014. It would also surpass the combined fee that Leicester paid for Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante and Mahrez before going on to win the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri.

Even after the Italian led Leicester to the title, The Mirror reported that he was paid just £3m after being axed six months into a new four-year deal. But Rodgers will be set to receive a huge bonus should he become unemployed, and it will be the second settlement of his career after being sacked by Liverpool back in 2015.
