Souness warns Spurs only a ‘nightmare run with injuries’ will help them challenge Man City to title
‘People are playing for second place’: Graeme Souness insists Tottenham and the rest of the Premier League can forget about challenging Man City for the title… as he says only an ‘injury nightmare’ would see Antonio Conte’s men challenge for top spot
- Graeme Souness does not think Spurs will challenge for Premier League title
- He has argued that Man City will only lose if they suffer a run of injuries to squad
- The former manager has backed Antonio Conte to get the best out of Spurs
Tottenham may have dug in to beat a good Brighton side, but Graeme Souness reckons their title ambitions rests on Manchester City’s luck with injuries.
Harry Kane’s first-half goal was enough to give Spurs three points at the end of a tough week for the club following the sudden death of fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone. The win sees Spurs third in the Premier League table only behind Arsenal and City.
However, Souness believes that to challenge Pep Guardiola’s side to the Premier League title they will have to benefit from City having an ‘absolute nightmare run with injuries’, and he says the same goes for the rest of the league.

Souness reckons teams are playing for second place unless Man City suffer bad injuries
He said on Sky Sports: ‘They are only challengers is City have an absolute nightmare run with injuries, and I think that applies to everyone else behind City.
‘I think people are playing for second place if City don’t have a disaster with injuries, that is how good they are.’
Souness did argue that manager Antonio Conte will be pleased with how the week has ended for the club and how they have overcome the challenges that the team has faced after losing Ventrone.
Souness has backed Spurs boss Antonio Conte to help the team dig in and get results
He added: ‘I think he [Conte] will be delighted with today, you know I have lived and worked and played in Italy their mentality is quite different to ours and he will see digging a result out today as a really good weeks work after a death of one of their group.’
‘They showed a bit of steel again, this is why they are quite different under this manager. He is a manager that you will fall out with, he is a manager that pushes the players all the way to the line and I think he gets the most out of players.
‘I think he is a great man for that job and I think Spurs can be feisty now and dig in to get results.’
