Jurgen Klopp escapes touchline ban after Man City red card – but still gets punished

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has escaped a touchline ban for his red card against Manchester City earlier this month.

Klopp lost his cool during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield just over a week ago. The German boss saw red after City midfielder Bernardo Silva got away with pulling on Mohamed Salah’s shirt in the second half.

Referee Anthony Taylor and linesman Gary Beswick did not deem the incident to be worthy of a free-kick, infuriating Salah and Klopp. The 55-year-old marched up to Beswick on the touchline and launched into a verbal tirade just inches from the official’s face.

Taylor took a dim view of Klopp’s antics and immediately brandished a red card. The former Borussia Dortmund manager wasn’t happy but accepted his punishment and skulked off down down the tunnel.

Klopp screamed in the face of the assistant referee at Anfield

The FA have now confirmed that Klopp has escaped a touchline ban, although he has been fined a sum of £30,000. A statement from the FA on Thursday afternoon read: “Jurgen Klopp has been fined £30,000 for breaching FA Rule E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League match against Manchester City FC on Sunday 16 October 2022.

“The manager accepted that his behaviour during the 86th minute was improper, and an independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanction during a hearing. This sanction is subject to appeal by either Jurgen Klopp or The FA following receipt of the independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons.”

It means Klopp will be on the touchline when Liverpool welcome Leeds United to Anfield on Saturday evening. The Reds are looking to bounce back from last week’s disappointing defeat against Nottingham Forest, which left them eighth in the Premier League table after the weekend’s results.
