Dog owner left with £7k vet bill following surgery after pooch swallowed a rock

A family have been left with a hefty £7,000 vet bill after their pet dog swallowed a rock and required life-saving surgery.

Milo the Weimaraner was vomiting and producing blood, concerning his family who rushed him to a hospital where a vet said the four-year-old dog could have eaten something it wasn’t meant to.

As it turned out, the energetic pup had chewed through some socks and a scan later revealed a rock lodged in its lower intestine, WalesOnline reported.

One upset tummy later, surgery followed and cost the family, from Porth, Rhondda, a whopping total of £7,000.

Milo, 4, was in need of a series of surgeries

Owner Shannon Stone said: “They gave us the options of taking him home with pain medication and seeing if it would pass or leaving him there under observation.

“Obviously we left him there to be sure. We had a phone call later that night that he needed life saving surgery to remove the rock.”

Milo went under the knife to remove the rock, but after the surgery, Shannon says he “wasn’t doing well” and “started deteriorating” so had to head back to the surgery.

Shannon continued: “That first surgery cost £3,500. But he had the surgery and he wasn’t doing well, he came home and he started deteriorating.

Racking up a hefty total of £7,000, the vet bills have taken their toll on the family (stock)

“We took him back in and he had to have another surgery to remove a larger section of his lower intestine as he was battling sepsis. This cost upward of £4,000 and daily after care was around £500.

“When they said about the second surgery, we got told you either need to come up here and put him to sleep or pay £4,000 for the second surgery. In that moment you just can’t think. He is only four, his life has only just started.

“He acts like a puppy, he is so energetic. He is doing so much better now but he doesn’t understand he needs to rest, he wants to run and play. And he hates his cone.”

The family were covered by pet insurance for the first £2,000 but are desperately trying to shore up funds for the remaining balance, setting up a fundraiser to meet their goals.
