Chelsea flop Timo Werner could miss World Cup after limping off with an injury

Timo Werner is a doubt for the World Cup after he limped off in the Champions League.

The former Chelsea striker suffered an injury to his left ankle during RB Leipzig‘s 4-0 away win against Shakhtar Donetsk, which forced him to be substituted after just 19 minutes of the match.

He’s set to undergo scans upon his return to Germany, but it’s sparked fears he could be absent from their World Cup squad in Qatar. They play Japan in their first game of the tournament in just 20 days.

While Werner’s time at Stamford Bridge didn’t go to plan following his near-£50million move from Leipzig in 2020, he’s always been an influential part of Hansi Flick’s side. He has 24 goals in 55 appearances for his nation.

And the 26-year-old has also found form at club level again since returning to his former club in the summer. Werner has scored nine times in 15 games in all competitions so far this season, as well as setting up a further four goals.

In contrast, he found the back of the net on just 23 occasions during his two years with Chelsea. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes he’s back to his best thanks to a boost in confidence.

Speaking on the CBS Sports earlier this month, the pundit said: “I will call it confidence. You have players who don’t care if you put your arm around them. They will come, execute and leave.

“Then you have some players that need to feel the love. They need to feel maybe that they are going to play for 90 minutes.”
