American living in the UK mocks British rivers and asks why they are ‘green’

An American living in the UK questioned why British rivers look ‘green’ instead of ‘normal blue’ colour.

There are many things that divide us from our neighbours across the pond – debates on dishwasher salmon being one of them.

But this US expat was left baffled as to why our waters appear to be a different colour to those back home.

The American pointed out the bodies of water do not have the stereotypical glimmering crystal blue look which has now caused a backlash from Brits on TikTok.

On a typical grey sky day, the American filmed a river that had a ‘murky’ appearance as they asked: “Why do all British rivers have green water instead of normal blue water in normal rivers?

“Is it due to trash or global warming?”

The American is not keen on British rivers

And, to no surprise it caused quite the stir in the comments.

Many people took the opportunity to mock Brits and the cause of the ‘green’ looking river.

One person giggled: “To stop Boris from jumping in and becoming a fish.”

Another user mocked: “It’s not water. It’s tea.”

While a third chuckled: “Random guess it’s like that cause they don’t have sun light.”

They expected blue bodies of water

Whereas others poked fun at the American and knowledge of bodies of water.

One user slammed: “Someone failed history.”

A second person said: “Blue isn’t normal colour of rivers.”

Someone else informed: “It’s called silt from riverbed erosion that’s why we have strong rivers.”

It turns out that no matter how ‘clean’ the river is it will still have the brown ‘muddy’ appearance due to the river bed layered with silt.

For example, in regards to the Thames, MyLondon reports: “No matter how much work is done to clean the Thames, it will still look brown, as this is because it is a muddy river, owing to the silt on the riverbed.

“How it looks isn’t a good litmus test for its health.”
