Piers Morgan loses £4,000 bet as England draw with USA with fans dubbing it ‘silver lining’

Piers Morgan has lost a £4,000 bet after England’s draw with the USA but fans are dubbing it a “silver lining”.

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge placed a bet with American broadcaster Brian Kilmeade ahead of the match on Friday, with Morgan backing the Three Lions to win. With the match ending goalless, it means that Morgan now has to pay out £4,135 after agreeing to the $5,000 wager.

He tweeted after the match: “That just cost me $5,000. Thanks, Gareth.” The money is set to be split between American charities Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Folds of Honor, as requested by Kilmeade.

Morgan added: “Excellent charities. Will sort payment tomorrow. Well played @USMNT.”

England fans have since joked Morgan losing money made up for their side’s poor performance and failure to win their second World Cup group stage match.

One fan tweeted: “I’d sit through that game a thousand times over if I knew this would be the outcome each time.” Another added: “When Piers loses, everyone wins.”

A third wrote: “Every cloud and all that.” Meanwhile, a different fan also commented: “Oh, there were some highlights then.”

During the match, the outspoken broadcaster had joined fans and pundits by calling for the introduction of Phil Foden by Gareth Southgate to solve England’s lack of creativity going forward.

He first tweeted: “Southgate should bring on Foden for 2nd half,” before adding: “FFS.. Foden.. Foden… Foden… bring on f***ing Foden.”

Southgate instead opted to bring Jordan Henderson, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford off the bench during the second half as England laboured to a draw.

England laboured to a goalless draw against the USA on Friday

Supporters had flocked to social media during the match to demand Southgate send the Manchester City midfielder on, while others have even called for him to be sacked before Tuesday’s match against Wales.

England remain top of group B ahead of that game and their progression to the knockout stages is all but confirmed. Victory over Wales would see Southgate’s side top the group regardless of the result between Iran and the USA.
