Saudi Arabia fan changes into Poland kit after Robert Lewandowski scored to kill game

A Saudi Arabia fan was spotted taking off his country’s kit to reveal a Robert Lewandowski shirt underneath – just after the Barcelona striker scored against his team.

It came during the Saudi’s 2-0 defeat to Poland on Saturday, where Lewandowski netted his first World Cup goal ever. But that would have done little to take the steam out of the Middle East nation, who looked the better team on several occasions.

If not for their shoddy finishing, which was erratic throughout the contest, Saudi Arabia might have followed up their brilliant 2-1 win over Argentina with another victory to qualify from their group.

Nevertheless, it was enough for one fan to appear to switch allegiances during the match against Poland. Shortly after Lewandowski netted in the 82nd minute, a supporter in a Saudi shirt took it off to reveal a Poland kit – with the Barcelona star’s name on the back.

The fan then started celebrating the goal wildly that made the scores 2-0. Lewandowski had missed a penalty against Mexico in Poland’s World Cup opener but was alert when he capitalised on an error from Abdulelah Al Malki before tucking the ball past goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais.

However, the true star of the show was Juventus star Wojciech Szczesny who pulled off a remarkable double save from a penalty to stop Saudi Arabia from scoring an equaliser just five minutes after Piotr Zielinski had given Poland the lead.

Saudi Arabia had five shots on target to Poland’s three and dominated possession with 64 per cent of the ball. However, the prowess of former Arsenal goalkeeper Szczesny put on a man-of-the-match display to keep the Saudis at bay.

There are plenty of Saudi fans in attendance in Qatar – with both nations sharing a border – and it felt more like a home game for the Green Falcons. Despite the defeat, the team were cheered off at the Education City Stadium.

Well, nearly all the fans – except one, clearly.
