Diego Maradona promised to run naked through Buenos Aires if Argentina won the World Cup
Football fans were denied the chance to see Diego Maradona run naked through the streets of Buenos Aires after Argentina crashed out of the World Cup.
One of the beautiful game’s great characters right up until his death in November 2020, Maradona made the outrageous claim when he was manager of Argentina before the 2010 World Cup.
“If we win the World Cup, I will run naked around the EL Obelisco in the centre of Buenos Aires,” Maradona said live on air during an interview with FM Metro radio station.

Had Argentina gone all the way in South Africa 12 years ago, the Argentine press almost certainly would have made the Napoli and Barcelona legend keep his promise. Maradona previously posed naked for El Grafico magazine.
The late star’s promise to get naked spawned several copy cat attempts in the lead up to the tournament. Argentinian sex symbol Luciana Salazar said she would strip off and join Maradona if Argentina went on to lift the World Cup.
“Diego, if Argentina wins, I’ll join you in the obelisk,” she wrote on Twitter.

Paraguayan model Larissa Riquelme then joined Maradona and Salazar with a promise of her own. She also said she would bare her naked body if her nation went all the way in South Africa.
Asked if she would match Maradona’s promise, she told Globoesporte: “Of course, but with my body painted with the colours of Paraguay.”
Unfortunately for Riquelme, Paraguay crashed out in the quarter-finals of the tournament, losing 1-0 to eventual World Cup winners Spain.

Argentina didn’t fare much better, exiting at the same stage but in much more explosive fashion, going down 4-0 against Germany.
Maradona was denied the chance to run naked around Buenos Aires and found himself out of a job later that summer when the Argentinian FA didn’t renew his contract.
