Raphael Varane suffers France ‘stinker’ as Man Utd defender turns like a ship for goal

France defender Raphael Varane was ‘turned like a ship’ as his country fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to African minnows Tunisia in the World Cup.

Tunisia took the lead in the 58th minute through Wahbi Khazri who went on a mazy run skipping past France’s defence to cooly strike the ball home. And as he encroached on France’s penalty area, Khazri deftly wrong-footed Varane and his defensive counterparts, leading fans to single out the Manchester United centre-back who was having “a stinker”.

One fan said: “Varane having a stinker. #mufc.” Supporters were shocked by Varane’s lack of effort in stopping Khazri from scoring Tunisia’s first goal of the competition and one claimed that his move to United from Real Madrid was to blame for his decline in form.

The fan said: “No wonder Varane is as bad as he is, now he plays for Utd.” And a third was shocked by the display of Champions League veteran Varane, adding: “That’s rather suspect from Mr Champions League Varane.”

Varane could only look on helplessly as Khazri skipped past him

And others insisted Varane’s mistake should see him replaced by Arsenal’s William Saliba at the back, and called for Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps to make the change.

A fourth user declared: “Look at Raphaël Varane for the goal… where’s William Saliba, Deschamps?.” Plus another chimed in: “KHAAAZZZZZZRRRRRIIIIIII! Varane stuck in the mud your time is up old man get Saliba on!”

And Deschamps seemingly took the advice of fans when he brought on Arsenal star Saliba for Varane just five minutes later. The switch seemed to do the trick as France failed to concede another goal in the game, although Tunisia won the clash in spite of some last-minute drama.

Antonine Griezmann thought he pulled one back for Les Bleus in the dying minutes of stoppage time when he fired home from the right.

But after a VAR check, the goal was ruled out by officials as Griezmann was deemed offside in the build-up, plus there was an alleged foul on Tunisia ace Montassar Talbi who headed the ball in Atletico Madrid ace’s direction.
