Ivan Rakitic mocks Romelu Lukaku’s horror show – insisting Croatia owe him ‘vacation’
Former Croatian star Ivan Rakitic couldn’t help but take a cheeky swipe at Romelu Lukaku after Croatia knocked Belgium out of the World Cup on Thursday afternoon.
Lukaku had a handful of glorious chances to send Belgium’s golden generation into the knockout stages – and perhaps their last chance to win any sort of silverware. However, the former Chelsea man fluffed his lines.
And Rakitic couldn’t be happier with the outcome, as he took to social media to thank Lukaku. Rakitic, who retired from international football in 2020, joked he owed the Belgian superstar a holiday.

In a video that went viral, Rakitic joked: “Let’s go Lukaku! We have to pay him a month of vacation in Split. Let’s go!”
However, not all of Rakitic’s compatriots were in the same mood, and Lukaku’s Inter Milan team-mate Ivan Perisic said: “I was with him for two or three minutes after the game. This is football, once you score, another time you miss.
“He’s a really strong player. Now I hope he can win as many trophies as possible with the Inter shirt. For us, the most important thing was to pass the group. We played a good game, as did they. But I think, considering the three games, we deserved to go ahead in this World Cup.”

Lukaku left the pitch in tears after his performance – which fans dubbed as one of the worst in World Cup history.
He had to be consoled by Thierry Henry, before he put his fist through the plastic shield that made up part of the Belgian dugout.
