South Korea star dubbed World Cup’s sexiest player has gone from 20k followers to 2.2m
South Korea has a new hero, and Son Heung-min could soon see his star outshined by Cho Gue-sung.
The 24-year-old was South Korea’s hero in the group stage – when he came off the bench to find the next twice. However, it’s his looks that have gathered attention, with fans branding him as the World Cup’s sexiest star.
That is backed up by his surge in followers on Instagram: before the World Cup, Cho had 20,000 followers on Instagram, but he now boats an impressive 2.2million followers. And that tally is still rising rapidly as fans search for more snaps of the star.

A live stream of Cho on the bench saw over 6million people tune in, while the same clip on Twitter has over 7million views.
On top of that clip, the hashtag “ChoGuesung” on TikTok has over 200m views. And all the attention has led to some fans reaching out to the striker with marriage proposals, but that has led to Cho turning off notifications on his phone.
A South Korean journalist told The Athletic: “He had to get some rest. His phone was going all night. It was keeping him awake. He was trying to concentrate on football and, all the time, the messages were coming.”
