Sainsbury’s sparks furious backlash from shoppers as barriers won’t open until a receipt is scanned

Sainsbury’s customers have been left ‘insulted’ and feeling ‘like hostages’ after some stores require shoppers to scan their receipts before leaving the store.

A handful of self-checkouts at the supermarket giant now have barriers that require customers to show proof of purchase to leave the store by using receipt scanners.

Without showing a receipt, the barriers will not open and shoppers will not be able to leave the store.

Buyers have hit out at the supermarket, with one saying they feel ‘insulted’ and another calling the 153-year-old shop ‘(a) joke of a super market.’

One shopper tagged Sainsburys’ official Twitter account and said: ‘How dare you insult me, by scanning receipts to leave.

‘Farewell you untrusting store.’

Another ranted on twitter: ‘Essentially they are holding (people) hostage against their will.’

One user took to Twitter to say: ‘Scan your receipt to exit Sainsbury’s … Another step closer to a cashless society and control..’

Angry shoppers took to Twitter to express their frustration with the barriers at the self-service checkout

Another customer said: ‘I will NOT be scanning a receipt to leave the store. Try it and I’m suing for false imprisonment.’

However other retailers have introduced the same rule for its customers. Primark began trialling self-service checkouts with barriers that open upon scanning proof of purchase in its Sheffield and Northampton stores.

According to the Derbyshire Live, Primark has announced that the trial was ‘positive’ and that they will be expanding the checkout to further stores.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: ‘This is not a new security measure and features in a small number of our stores at the self-service checkout areas.’
