Angel Di Maria’s World Cup final texts on WhatsApp to wife who hated Manchester

Angel Di Maria’s pre-World Cup final texts to his wife show how confident he was that Argentina were going to beat France.

Di Maria returned from injury to star for his nation in Sunday’s (December 18) showdown. He won the penalty which Lionel Messi converted to open the scoring before doubling the lead by finishing off a fantastic team move.

The game swung back and forth after he was substituted in the second half, but Argentina ultimately reigned victorious on penalties. And there was never any doubt in Di Maria’s mind that they would be lifting the trophy.

His wife Jorgelina Cardoso shared screenshots of their WhatsApp conversation from the eve of the game on Instagram. Di Maria told her: “I will be a world champion, my love. It’s written. I will score a goal. Because it’s written like Maracana and Wembley.”

He then added: “Go and enjoy tomorrow because we are going to be world champions. Because the 26 of us here and the families deserve it.”

Is Di Maria cocky or do you need to be that confident? Let us know in the comments section.

His failed spell at Manchester United is one blot on his CV, though. Both he and Jorgelina struggled to adapt to life in north west England before leaving after just one season.

She tore into the city, telling Argentine TV show LAM: “People are all weird. You walk around and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you.

“The food is disgusting. The women look like porcelain. It was horrible, so horrible. I just told him, ‘Darling, I want to kill myself, it’s night time at two o’clock’.”
