Liverpool fans left raging at Darwin Nunez after biggest flaw in his game rears its head again

Liverpool fans have been left raging at Darwin Nunez’s finishing once again after losing 3-2 to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

The Reds were knocked out in the last-16 of the competition by their Premier League rivals in an action-packed affair on Thursday night. Goals from Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez had been immediately followed up by Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah equalising for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had one more major chance to break level after Nathan Ake made it 3-2, with 23-year-old Nunez breaking through on goal in the 72nd minute. But the £64million Uruguayan striker failed to capitalise on his one-on-one as he slotted the ball wide of the post.

And Reds supporters were left tearing their own hair out in agony as their expensive summer signing delivered another anticlimactic display in front of goal.

One frustrated fan on Twitter wrote: “Nunez you’ve got to hit one of those on target man. It’s like he’s not even aiming for goal. Brilliant runs but poor finishing.”

Another wrote: “Darwin Nunez‘s movement is so good, but his finishing is so poor.” while a third tweeted: “Nunez’s finishing has been horrendous all game.”

Others chimed in by saying: “Does Nunez practise finishing at training?” and: “There is no way that Darwin Núñez is better than me at finishing. And I’m pretty fat.”

The forward was able to register an assist in his first game back since crashing out of the World Cup group stages with Uruguay. He sprinted down the left flank before squaring a sumptuous ball for Salah to tap-in for Liverpool’s second.

But Nunez still showed plenty more of the lacklustre finishing which has been a feature of his play since his move from Benfica. He has nine goals across 19 matches this campaign, having netted 34 last season.
