Fans gobsmacked as Gabby Agbonlahor calls Emi Martinez ‘best keeper in the world’
Football fans could barely believe their ears as Gabby Agbonlahor labelled Argentina’s World Cup hero Emi Martinez the “best goalkeeper in the world”.
Martinez is absent for Aston Villa as they take on Liverpool in their first Premier League game back after the international break. He was understandably a hot topic before the game after playing a crucial role in last week’s final.
But former Villa striker-turned-pundit Agbonlahor made an audacious claim while working on Amazon Prime Video’s coverage. “I think he’s the best goalkeeper in the world,” he said while discussing Martinez.

“He’s won the World Cup with Argentina. Outstanding performance. I mean some of the saves he made all through the tournament and I think everyone watching the final knew that Argentina were going to win with Emi Martinez in goal.
“So he’s got to come back to Aston Villa now and he’s signed to 2027, so there’s no worries for Aston Villa, they’ve done their business early and he’s coming back as the best ‘keeper in the world.”
Agbonlahor received a grilling online, with one fan tweeting: “Great keeper yes, but THE GREATEST?”

A second posted: “Agbonlahor just said Martinez is the best keeper in the world, how does this man have a pundit job?” Another also asked: “How does Gabby Agbonlahor get paid to talk about football?”
One wrote: “Nah I don’t get drawn into people who clearly game the media for attention but Agbonlahor calling Martinez the best keeper in the world, he wouldn’t even the best keeper on the pitch today.”
“What a clown he’s got to be the worst pundit I’ve ever listened too,” said one, while another brutally added: “Gabby Agbonlahor has the football IQ of a spoon.”
