Ross Smith lands double and kisses dart as fans joke there’s ‘no love lost’ between pair

Ross Smith kissed the dart board after he won his third set over Dirk van Duijvenbode.

The Englishman was knocked out of the World Championship by the Dutchman after a pulsating contest at Alexandra Palace. At times, it looked like neither Smith nor Van Duijvenbode wanted to take the third set, after they both missed vital finishing opportunities.

However, Smith eventually managed to grab the third set to give himself a third match lead. And after edging into the lead, he marked the occasion by kissing the final dart of the set.

Smith turned to the crowd, punched the air with delight and let out a huge roar of victory when he hit the double four to secure the win. While he did not manage to win the overall contest, darts fans will not forget the topsy-turvy third set between the Englishman and the Dutchman.

Van Duijvenbode had the opportunity to close out the third set with 136, but he could only find a 20, a treble 18, and a seven to bring his score to 52. Smith then missed the opportunity to close the contest from 153 to bring his score to 32.

However, the Englishman watched his rival fluff his lines from 52, before missing his own targets from 32 by hitting a 16 and missing the double eight twice. Smith put his darts and took a sip of water and waited for Van Duijvenbode to close out the leg and the set from 20.

Yet, his aim was off again, as he only mustered a 10, before failing to hit double five on two occasions. Despite the tension, a relieved Smith managed to claim the set by hitting an eight and a double four.

Smith could not hide his relief after taking the fifth set

After his exuberant celebrations, Darts fans laughed there will be no love lost between the pair. “No love lost between this pair,” one fan laughed on social media. “Fantastic viewing these two another added,” before one other fan took exception to the evident frustration of Van Duijvenbode’s face.

“What I don’t get is that Dirk appears to be annoyed by Smiths emotions? Like, isn’t Dirk one of the players showing the most emotion on stage??” Duijvenbode rediscovered his composure and his aim by winning the next two sets to move into the Round of 16.
