Fellow darts star would’ve used ear defenders like Gerwyn Price – if he’d been allowed

Paul Nicholson has rushed to the defence of Gerwyn Price following his ear-defender stunt at the World Darts Championship and insisted he would’ve used them too – if he’d been allowed.

Price shocked fans during his quarter-final against Gabriel Clemens when he returned from the break wearing a massive pair of ear defenders to block out the noise from the crowd.

The Ice Man had threatened to wear the noise-cancelling headphones before the tournament, but no-one could quite believe it when he appeared on stage with them on. The move prompted conversations on social media, although they didn’t have the desired effect for Price as he went on to lose 5-1.

Price’s antics split darts fans right down the middle, but he has an ally in the former of former pro Nicholson. Just like Price, the Asset wasn’t a huge fan favourite with the crowd and regularly found himself on the receiving end of boos and whistles.

And the Aussie-Geordie has admitted he would’ve done the same thing as Price during his time as a professional – if he’d been allowed. Posting on Twitter, he wrote: “I have to say, if in the time of Tommy Cox being tournament director, I’d been allowed to use ear defenders, I would’ve done it too.

Price’s stunt split darts fans down the middle

“I applaud people when they try something new and it’s permitted, if they feel it’s necessary.”

Others, however, disagreed with the 43-year-old. One user said: “Laughable coming from yourself considering you created a persona to antagonise the crowd, which in my view finished your career…”

While another added: “Baffled by your take here, you played out like a WWE heel in your pomp. You can’t have it both ways, playing the crowd then getting p***ed when they boo. Gerwyn is reaping what he sowed.”

However, Paul Nicholson is with the former world champion

Price hinted after his defeat to Clemens that he might not play at Ally Pally ever again. Writing on Instagram, he said: “So frustrating, you play all year round preparing for this one tournament. So gutted I wasn’t let play but good luck everyone left in. Not sure I will ever play in this event again.”

The Ice Man also appeared to wipe his Instagram clean after Sunday night’s shenanigans. His profile no longer contains any posts or a picture of himself.
